A bug out bag should contaan all the items to ensure survival for at least 72 hours (3 days) as well as some items that will be required to set up for a longer period of time. It can be difficult to determine which items on a bug out bag list are essential and which can acutally be eliminated keeping in mind that the size and weight of the bag is of primary concern.
In order to create the perfect bug out bag, it is recommended to categorize items according to priority or need. Categories and essential items in each category should include:
1. Food And Water
Food and water are essential to survival and should top the list for items that go in a bug out bag. Pack at least 1.5 gallons (6 liters) of water per person which should be sufficient for 3 days. Water purification tablets or a filtration system are also important.
Pack rations that will provide the required nutrition and energy for the bug out period. MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) are a great idea as they are light weight and do not require a heating system. Dehydrated foods high in protein and glucose are also a good idea.
2. Shelter And Protection
Where will you sleep for the next 3 days and how will you protect yourself from environmental factors while outdoors? A tarp is great as it can protect you from the ground as well as provide a overhead cover. A rain coat is essential as is a lightweight, waterproof sleeping bag and emergency blanket. A dry change of clothes may be necessary as well as a fire starting kit. A tent is a bonus but not entirely necessary.
3. Communication
Information and communication is important in any bug out scenario. An emergency radio, two-way radio, cell phone and charger or even satellite phone should form part of your bug out gear. A flashlight/headlamp, glow sticks, flares and signal mirror can help you draw attention if necessary.
4. Health And First Aid
A first aid kit is absolutely essential as is packing all medication that you need. Bug spray and sunblock can also help save you some misery while sruviving in the great outdoors. Splints, bandages, disinfectants, painkillers, guaze, tweezers, scissors are all essential and other items that you may deem necessary to assist in the event of injury or illness.
5. Self Defense
It is important to provide for eventualties where self defence may be necessary. A knife is of absolute importance, not just for defence, but many other circumstances that may arise. Pepper srpay or a tazer are great defence items. A gun and ammunition should only be packed if the necessary training and practice have ensured that the use of the weapon is of benefit in a defensive scenario.
Of course there are many items not mentioned here that are also important such as batteries, a shovel, a pen, cash, etc. Don’t get to stuck on sticking to a spcific bug out bag list and be prepared to change out items as needed.
