Artificial intelligence is getting smarter while people become more dependent on technology. Global warming has brought about an increased number of natural disasters, and political instability seems to be a global epidemic. In other words, will it really be so silly or unrealistic to consider learning more about urban survival? Given that so many great minds believe the human race has reached a point of extinction, it would be ignorant not to be prepared.
Here are some basics things to keep in mind when caught in the middle of an urban meltdown. And whether it’s caused by a natural disaster or a mass riot, the principles stay the same.
1. Reach The Exit Point
First things first, a survivor should have a bug out bag packed and ready. As expected, the bag should contain all the essentials for survival, such as water, food, compass, etc. The next step is to move quickly and break away from areas that are densely populated.
In a chaos situation, others are going to come to the same conclusion, but it will probably take the majority of people a few minutes to get there. Why? Because they probably aren’t prepared, or they are part of the problem.
The point is to reach exit points before everyone else does in order to get a clean escape.
2. A Survivalist Respects His/Her Environment
Just because a survivalist gets caught inside an urban setting doesn’t make it any less dangerous. For example, damaged buildings can come down at any minute, not to mention the toxic smoke that might be hanging in the air.
Ideally, a bug out bag should include protection for these hazards, like gloves, protection for eyes and ears, and something to breathe within a toxic smoke area.
3. Don’t Draw Attention
In a scenario where all hell has broken loose, how many people can really be trusted? Without law enforcement and rules to protect the survivalist, it’s best to not draw any attention or take risks.
This means wearing typical clothes instead of survival gear, and not showcasing equipment or food in public. The idea is to get lost in the chaos instead of becoming a possible target.
4. Appear Threatening As Supposed To Friendly
While it might feel natural to embrace anyone who appears friendly or supportive, remember the current situation. Essentially, nobody is safe, and if a survivalist gives the idea that he/she will make an easy target, they will probably become one.
It’s in the best interests of the survivalist to project a threatening attitude rather than one of a potential victim.
5. A Survivalist Follows Instincts – Not The Crowd
Lastly, when it comes to urban survival, a survivalist should not take his/her cues from a chaotic mob. In other words, if everyone is stammering in one direction towards a specific place, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are right.
A survivalist will take a moment to assess whether it really is the best route and if there are alternatives available.
It’s unfortunate to think that an urban disaster isn’t as unlikely as people make it out to be. The reality is that anything can happen within a few seconds, and being prepared can be the difference between dying and surviving.
